Joseph H. Pilates’ method of body conditioning was known as “Contrology” or the art of control. He defined Contrology as “The science and art of coordinated body-mind-spirit development through natural movements under the strict control of the will”. “Contrology develops the body uniformly, corrects wrong postures, restores vitality, invigorates the mind, and elevates the spirit”.

Mr. Pilates combined his experience with the Eastern philosophy of exercise emphasizing stretching/limberness, relaxation, breathing, centeredness, and wholeness, with the Western approach emphasizing strength, and muscle tone. All of the exercises are initiated by activating the Center, Core, or what Mr. Pilates called “The Powerhouse”, which are the wide band of muscles under the ribcage extending down to just below the buttocks. The exercises are often described as “movement flowing out from a strong center”.

The body is worked holistically, with a dynamic, rhythm, and flow to each exercise. There are minimal repetitions to each exercise (3-5 reps) to avoid fatigue, which would compromise the quality of movement. The body positioning is varied to avoid overuse of the same muscles, thereby creating muscle imbalances. The work out time decreases as movement efficiency increases, allowing more exercises to be performed in less time. The system is clearly “a science of the body and an art form”.
